IMPROVISATION is/as ARCHITECTURE
3rd experimental research exhibition and conference of ‘JUST ARCHITECTURE?’
FUGA Centre for Architecture in Budapest.

Exhibition: October 28th to November 19th 2013.
Conference: 7th and 8th of November 2013.

We are calling for proposals by professionals and students critically reflecting improvisation in architecture and architectural education.

In architecture improvisation is a decisive competence. It helps integrating the many dynamic socio-material contingencies architecture is subjected to. Education, however, still posits successful building as the result of authorial object-design and selling strategies.

Such imposition of authority consumes enormous resources and ultimately alienates the architect. The mediating qualities of architecture, in turn, reintegrate the profession.

With regard to improvisation we examine how so called ‘spatial agencies’ redefine professional architectural practice and production, and how relevant mediating qualities are differentiated and taught. The aim is to explore improvisation in both conventional architectural practice and new experimental practices, and ask how architectural education can involve the training of such appropriate competences.

All accepted proposals should be integrated into a common exhibition at the FUGA Budapest Center of Architecture. Therefore, conceive of your proposal in terms of an architectural plan, installation, performance, story or any other form of expression as your personal encounter for improvisation.

Submit proposals in text, drawings, video, etc. indicating your affiliation to Ronny Hardliz (ronny.hardliz@hslu.ch) and Katona Vilmos (katwilat@gmail.com) by 15th of August 2013.

Texts proposals should not exceed 500 words, drawings and images should be in high resolution but not exceed 5MB, and videos should be no longer than 3 minutes. Preferably documents are uploaded somewhere and you provide us with a link.

All accepted proposals will be published on the website of ‘Just Architecture?’ International participants can look out for Hungarian peers in this way. Participants from Hungary will realize the public exhibition in Budapest as a built installation integrating all accepted proposals.

From 7th to 9th of November 2013 at the conference all participants will be present to discuss their proposals within the exhibition.

In order to facilitate the search for matching proposals, please indicate the keywords most suited to your project (or add your own):
